Job Description Our Development & Permits department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Plans Examiner III for Zoning Plan review.
The successful candidate for this position will be able to do the following: Develop an understanding of the intricacies found in the Chesapeake Zoning Ordinance and how to apply the provisions thereof.
Possess the skills necessary to review preliminary and final plans for compliance with the Chesapeake Zoning Ordinance.
Have superior communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to apply them to determinations, customer contact, associated Boards and Commissions, City Management, and co-workers.
Become familiar with the systems that are used daily and how they work together to administer and record workflow and productivity.
Retain a calm courteous demeanor in the face of stressful situations and dealing with angry or irrational individuals.
Be capable of effectively explaining information, concepts, and code requirements to a wide range of persons including the general public, contractors, design professionals, and others.
Provide excellent customer service and maintain good working relationships with co-workers.
Be capable of managing multiple tasks and projects in an organized and highly efficient manner.

Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of five years of full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.
Special skills or equipment certification will be required such as State Plans Examiner, Building Inspector, Fire Protection Plans Reviewer, and others.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications Minimum of 3 years experience with the Zoning Ordinance, Operational knowledge of Accela, CSR, and Laserfiche preferred.
