Animal Control Officer’s job duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Respond to complaints and reports regarding animals.
Impound animals in accordance with local and state laws for care and control of animals.
Handles reports of vicious, injury inflicting animals; impounds or quarantines offending animal, advises animal owner of applicable laws, and issues summons when needed.
Issues summons, secures warrants and petitions, prepares court documentation, and testifies in court as required.
Communicates via radio or telephone with dispatch, other ACOs, police officers, fire department, etc.
Investigates animal killings, cruelty to animal, inadequate care of animals, dangerous dog, and nuisance animal complaints.
Educates the public on proper control, care, and protection of domestic animals, on dealing with wild animals, and stray or vicious domestic animals.
Assists citizens with nuisance wildlife; refers complaints to other agencies or organizations as needed.
Performs humane euthanasia on healthy, sick, injured, feral, and vicious animals.
Performs field euthanasia of injured deer by firearm.
Rechecks cruelty situations to verify follow through with corrective action.
Returns telephone calls, checks voicemail messages, and completes paperwork.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this position requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards, Must obtain and maintain DCJS certification for weapon carrying (must be at least 21 years of age), firearms, OC spray, etc.
After being hired, attend training to obtain and maintain veterinarian certification to use controlled drugs to sedate and euthanize animals SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: This job classification provides service to the community on a 24-hour basis during all hours of the day and night.
In order to accommodate this 24-hour service, this job class is required to work on rotating schedules, which includes working weekends and holidays, and may involve work in excess of regularly scheduled hours (overtime) when required by operational necessity.
Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of animal care and behavior.
Knowledge of and the ability to recognize symptoms of disease or injury in a variety of animals.
Knowledge of laws pertaining to animals and their application.
Customer service experience and the ability to interact and communicate effectively with other employees and the public.
Basic computer skills with the ability to perform data entry.
