80 starting hourly rate Job Description The Chesapeake Public Library ( CPL ) is seeking an outgoing, enthusiastic and detail-orientated Seasonal/Substitute Library Assistant I, who has a passion for public service, exemplary customer service and organizational skills to perform library/clerical work in a busy area library primarily in the Circulation Department.
Responsibilities of Library Assistant I Include: -Ability to use library and computer software to perform account maintenance; register new users; online resources within; check in/out library materials, online resources, and rooms; assist with maintaining various reports and/or records; troubleshoot computers; and copy, transcribe, enter and post data or information.
-Ability to renew, request, receive, inspect, sort and shelve library materials.
-Ability to handle various forms of tender and cash registers; point of sale machines; some knowledge of reconciling money; and process fees, fines, sales, and donations.
-Ability to assist with online resources; tablets and mobile devices; reader’s advisory; and use of other library materials and equipment.
-Ability to work independently for assigned tasks.
Excellent time management and multi-tasking skills.
Perform other related duties as assigned and assist at other service points as needed.
The weekly schedule is varied and includes day, evening and weekend hours.
May also include after-hours programming.
Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT : Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of three months of related, full-time equivalent experience in libraries or customer service-related industry or volunteerism equivalent to 6 months’ part-time work experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Depending on departmental operational requirements, may require valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards .
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies.
Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications Public library related experience desired.
Experience handling various forms of tender and cash registers.
